Google Maps does not run on a flip phone. The built-in browser can technically load it, but a 240 by 320 screen with no touch cannot do anything useful with a map. So people print directions before they leave, or they carry a smartphone they otherwise do not want.
What actually works on a small screen
A map is the wrong format for this screen. What works is what worked before smartphones: a list of turns, one per line, with the road name and the distance. You can read it at a glance without zooming, scrolling, or waiting for tiles to load.
The information is the same. The presentation fits the device.
Getting directions with Flip Assistant
Say where you are going, or type it. Flip Assistant returns turn-by-turn directions as plain text: the road, the direction, the distance, one step per line. The header shows total distance and drive time.
Business names work, not just street addresses. If you say "the hardware store in Liberty," it finds it and routes to it.
Saving a route for offline use
Directions that need signal to load are not useful on a road with no signal. A route in Flip Assistant can be saved to the phone and reopened from the main menu without a connection.
This is the practical difference between getting directions and having directions. Save the route before you leave, and it is there whether you have bars or not.
Other options
If you do not want to install an app, there are a few alternatives worth knowing about.
- Call 411 or your carrier's directory. An operator can give you directions. Charges vary.
- Text a navigation service. Some services accept a destination by text and reply with directions. The result arrives as a series of text messages, which works but is slow and hard to re-read.
- Print before you leave. Google Maps on a computer can print directions. This works until you need to make a stop on the way.
